OUTREACH
& HUMANITARIAN AID
Prior
to our last journey to Guatemala, Francesca came up with a brilliant
idea to give more meaning and purpose to our journeys to Guatemala.
She contacted the SEVA Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated
to assist and promote Mayan renewal in post-war Guatemala. It was
then that we got in contact with a Mayan operated community organization
known as the Oxlajuj B Aqtun, (The Thirteen Holy Mountains),
an association of the Maya Qeqchi communities working to address
the needs of hundreds of families in the Peten region of Guatemala.
This northern most region of Guatemala is the only area in which
many internally displaced and returned refugee communities have
been able to relocate without endangerment to their lives. However,
the climate is harsh, and lack of water throughout much of the year
is a serious concern for all the Qeqchi communities. There
are several projects that are part of a general plan to help these
people with the development of water wells, schools and health centers.
Their intention is to maintain their traditional customs and beliefs,
as well as have a voice in the political process.
On our last journey some of the Mayan people from the outlining
villages walked 1 - 2 days, anticipating our visit. The villagers
were very happy and grateful to receive our many gifts, which included
cash donations, fabrics, sewing & embroidery supplies, office
supplies, and computer equipment. With our help and donations the
community now has an email and a website. As welcomed and honored
guests, we ended up feasting and dancing in the streets together!
It was an amazing and rewarding experience for all.
We plan to continue this new tradition of bringing much needed supplies
and equipment, as requested by the community.
Our experience here can take many turns, and this is the time to
be open to unexpected invitations, as we have the privilege to learn
about the Mayan culture and to share with them on a personal level.
It is our hope that you can share this remarkable experience with
us!
If you are unable to travel with us, and you would like contribute
a cash donation, please make checks payable to New Native at PO
Box 271 Topanga, CA 90290, and we will be sure that the Mayan community
receives it.
Thank you!
